Events and Activities
SCB provides a variety of activities
for its members. Some activities are available
to non-members who also participate as well as the broader community who become
more educated on the sport of archery.
● Monthly Club Shoots –
Held on the second Sunday of the month.
Twenty-eight targets are shot from marked distances and the best 6 month’s
scores for adults and the best 3 month’s scores for the youth count towards an
annual award. Classes are divided
between male & female shooters, age group, and type of equipment used. Scores also count toward establishment of a
handicap for other NFAA tournaments around the country.
● Monthly Work Parties –
Held the Saturday morning before the monthly club shoot. Maintenance on the range is performed: preparing
and posting new targets, litter pick-up, etc.
● Club Meetings – Held
the first Tuesday of the month. Planning
for various activities and administrative issues are discussed.
● 3D League – Open to
members and non-members. Shooting
distances are from unmarked distances. This
is a great way to learn to estimate yardages and to prepare for a hunting trip. Awards are given at a BBQ at the end of the
session (usually 20 weeks starting in spring).
● Club Picnic – Another
great social event to enjoy the camaraderie of our archery family. It is usually a potluck BBQ with the club
providing the main course. Fun
activities are also planned for the day.
● A Shot in the Dark (Boo Shoot) – A fun
shoot. Target faces are whimsical Halloween
themed. Trick or treats are waiting for
the archers at each target. Adults shoot too!
● Ultimate Bowhunt – An
annual tournament sponsored by SCB where guests from all over the U.S. come to
shoot at marked distances 3D targets at our range.
● Annual Banquet – A
great social event, usually held at a local restaurant, where we honor our
club’s top archers for the year with awards.
Awards are also given for the most improved, the hunters, the Road
Warriors, the kids and also a special award, The Larry Dunaway Memorial Award,
is given to a club member who has gone above and beyond what is required of
them as a member.
● Road Warriors – A
group of members representing SCB that travel throughout the U.S. to various
tournaments held at the ranges of other affiliated clubs.
● Hunting Program – Recognizes
those members who hunt using archery equipment.
● Kids Only – A special
set of workshops and shooting events that are designed with kids in mind. It’s a great way to introduce the youth to
the sport of archery. They will learn
not only about shooting a bow, but also about tracking, survival, safety, discipline,
self-confidence, and sportsmanship as well as make new friends.
● Educational Workshops
– Presented by certified teachers and highly skilled archer members of the
club. A wide range of workshops have
included the history of archery, roots to the Miwok and Pomo Indians of the
area, the art of bow making, tracking and hunting safety. Some of the workshops have been specifically
geared toward the youth, teaching them about archery equipment as well as
safety awareness.
● Outreach – Other
Organizations have been hosted by SCB at our range. We have welcomed clubs and organizations such
as the Boy Scouts where they have used our range to learn about the sport of archery
and applied this knowledge and skill towards earning their merit badges. We have also hosted the Girl Scouts, 4H Club,
and the archery section of the California Correctional Officers Olympic Games
among others.
Some of our members have also
provided education to the youth through instruction at a variety of schools
throughout Sonoma and Lake Counties. Not only is archery taught, but also lessons
about wildlife, such as identifying different types of animals, their tracks,
their environment, and their importance to our ecosystem. Some of these presentations have been held in
cooperation with the California Department of Fish & Game.
In addition to local schools,
members have also worked with various clubs and organizations such as ‘Wheeling
Sportsman’, an organization for the disabled.
Also, members have taught Bowhunter and Hunting Safety Education courses
that are required by the California Department of Fish and Game before hunting
licenses can be obtained.
Our members have also volunteered
at booths at the Santa Rosa Sportsman’s Exposition and other expositions. These booths educate the community about the
sport of archery and allow youth and adults to experience archery in a safe
environment.
